« Taking the President to task | Main | Dreaming a New New Orleans » Refugees in AustinThe Toney Burger Center in South Austin will temporarily house refugees from New Orleans. People have been dropping stuff off... clothes etc. The Red Cross says please don't, it's creating a fire hazard... give money instead. [Link] jon posted this at 11:18 AM |

How many people will that center hold?
Houston has opened the Astrodome, Astrohall, Reliant Stadium and who knows what else.
San Antonio and Dallas and a lot of little towns are taking refugees. How many is Austin taking?

I don't think Austin expects many this far away, with so many going to Houston and SA first. I suspect we could accommodate many more, though, if needed.

When you're coming from New Orleans going to Austin is not much different than going to San Antonio and probably much better than traveling another 4/5 hours to Dallas from Houston as some have done.
It's beginning to look like Austin is all about liberal causes until they actually have to help someone.
Dell alone could be donated all kinds of stuff.

The earliest numbers I saw indicated they were planning for 150 people in Burger.
I'm trying to interpret that "Austin is all about liberal causes" statement in some charitable fashion, and failing. It strikes me as remarkably uninformed and hurtful of all the people and organizations that are trying to help.

Austin is actually closer than SA, where distance is concerned, but it's a direct shot down I10 to Houston, then San Antonio, and I suspect that route looks more practical than branching off on back roads. I'm sure any city with resources and accommodations will take whatever refugees they can. .. not sure why you're looking for a contest?
