We watched a stroke-damaged Dick Clark, still struggling with aphasia, bring in the New Year last night, and I realized how his appearance was symbolic – after one of the worst years ever, a year of war, disaster, plague, political corruption, economic volatility and spiritual confusion, I think we're all feeling damaged ... but, like Dick Clark, still hopeful that we can overcome overwhelming adversity.
