Around 2001, a study on multitasking (don't have citation) found two main causes for time loss when multitasking. First was "task shifting" as you noted above. Yet, the bigger culprit was "rule shifting". The rules for talking pm the phone are not the same as driving a car. The time required to shift from one activity was much ore impacted by having to reset the rulesfor the new activity. If memory serves me, it was .6 seconds when going from talking to driving. Do the math - that is a long distance when driving at speed!

A google search on multitasking should show CNN article with references.

Cheers to being a fool!!
